Lake Tekapo: Alpine Stargazing Experience with a Guide

1.Alpine Stargazing Experience with a Guide

★★★★★★★★★★4.5 · 626 reviews · 1h 15m · from $59Our pick

Meet at Silver River Stargazing in Lake Tekapo, then ride to private farmland inside the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve. Your guide uses lasers and a 14-inch telescope to explain southern constellations, planets, and deep-sky objects. Groups are capped at 10, warm jackets are supplied, and you receive a digital night-sky photo.

“The laser pointers were really cool and helped myself and my wife (who is visually impaired) track what the guide was talking about. He was clearly knowledge, clearly cared about stargazing and made special efforts to make sure my wife got the most out of the experience, especially with the telescope. The experience also included a high quality photo of us against the night sky, which while posted online (on Flickr) will still be gracing our wall when we return. Overall an incredible evening and well worth the money”

Lake Tekapo: Mountaintop Stargazing at Mount John Summit

4.Mountaintop Stargazing at Mount John Summit

★★★★★★★★★★4.5 · 176 reviews · 1h 45m · from $130

Ride from the Dark Sky Project base to Mount John’s 1,029-meter summit for 105 minutes of guided stargazing. Your astronomy guide uses lasers to map the Southern Sky, then brings selected objects into view through high-powered telescopes. Warm jackets are provided, but clear weather matters.

“It was well organised, they provide big warm jackets and plenty of parking near the centre before they drive you up to the location. Our guide was incredible knowledgeable and passionate about her job which added to the experience. Very weather dependent activity so worth checking this closer to the time to booking if you have the flexibility and worth waiting for the new moon, as although stunning to look at through the telescope, it made it too bright to see the Milky Way, so worth timing it with this you can. But a great and unique experience regardless”
